When you meet Christopher Akeibom Toh, President of African United Foundation, Inc, you will feel his compassion and empathy for others, along with his inherent desire to be a positive source of hope and change in another person’s life. Growing up in Cameroon, located in the Southwest Region of Africa, Christopher witnessed a culture that takes advantage of those who are vulnerable, and he found that difficult to ignore. “I initially wanted to pursue ministry but felt I could make a greater impact if I studied law.” Christopher attended the University of Yaounde II, located in Soa, Cameroon and earned his Bachelor’s in Law, before he decided to move to the United States in 2013.
Upon becoming acclimated to America, Christopher explored his passion for helping others and received certifications as a Nursing Assistant and Medication Aide in 2013 and 2017, respectively. His certifications have enabled him to work at Birmingham Green Nursing Home in Manassas, Virginia since 2018. “It means so much to receive handwritten cards from residents and to be there for them during challenging times in their lives. A sincere thank you means so much to me, and it is wonderful to know that my efforts are noticed and appreciated.” Christopher is a man of many talents, and he is fascinated with technology, cybersecurity, and forensics. He attended ITT Technical Institute in Virginia. Christopher is currently attending East Coast Polytechnic Institute (ECPI) and is on track to graduate in 2023 with his degree in Digital Forensics.
As a close friend of William Nkemson, Executive Director of African United Foundation, Christopher was drawn in when he initially heard William share his ideas about his quest to improve the lives of African children. “Serving on the Executive Board of AUF reminds me of my personal mission to be self-less and to do what I can with the resources that I have. My mindset is ’With a little, I feel that I can do a lot.’” The trips to orphanages to distribute collected donations such as food, school supplies, clothing and personal hygiene items are extremely meaningful to Christopher, and he looks forward to traveling back home, twice a year. Such necessities are welcomed with open arms and the children sing and dance upon receiving the ‘gifts.’ “While we are delivering the items that we think they need, we listen carefully to what they do need. Encouragement, hope, mentorship, and the ability to earn a decent wage are at the top of their list.”
Through African United Foundation, children’s futures are changed, and a better life looks promising. A child’s health improves, their ability to take care of themselves increases and new opportunities to provide for their extended family looks much brighter. It is not uncommon for the eldest sibling in a family to absorb the family’s entire financial burden, regardless of their age.
Operating from a servant’s heart is nothing new to Christopher Akeibom Toh. He contributes both time and money to St Jude Children’s Hospital, the Red Cross, and Regina Pacis Parish. “When I was growing up, I watched my Grandad deliver food and donations with great compassion for others. This has been instilled in me!” Christopher is a man who operates from his heart. “If you work hard and are dedicated to your career, you have the means to give back to others. As I like to say, ‘You cannot give what you don’t have.’” Christopher is focused on his mission to help others who are less privileged and in doing so, he feels he is honoring the memory of both of his Grandparents. Christopher wants to share hope and encouragement through African United Foundation, so that dreams do come true!
